Sleep is a crucial component of human physiology, and disturbances in sleep patterns are associated with various medical disorders and chronic diseases. Several investigations have demonstrated that sleep deprivation (SD) is associated with alterations in the immune system. However, there are still considerable gaps in our knowledge regarding how SD affects immunity in healthy humans. The aim of this study was to explore the short- and long-term effects of SD on innate immune response. Volunteers were randomly assigned to three groups: (i) the SD group, who were exposed to two consecutive nights of SD; (ii) the recovery group, who had a normal night of sleep; and (iii) the control group, who had a normal night of sleep and did not participate in SD. The study assessed the following variables in blood samples: lymphocyte cell subsets, natural killer cell activity, serum levels of cytokines, and certain acute phase proteins. Sleep deprivation was associated with an increase in the number of CD4+ T cells (p = 0.016) and a decrease in NK cells (p = 0.012). The duration of sleep deprivation was associated with greater changes in the number of CD4+ T cells (p = 0.03) and NK cells (p = 0.01) when compared with the acute phase response after 2 h. Our study demonstrated that SD is associated with alterations in the number of CD4+ T cells and NK cells in blood. The acute phase response was found to be affected by short-term, but not by long-term SD.Q: Is it appropriate to keep an open study guide for all topics? I am about to start a study group (have to do it as it is a requirement in my university). I have been on one in the past, but I wanted to know if it was good to have a study guide available for every topic we study, whether it be a new topic or a topic we have previously studied. My reason for this is that there are a lot of exams to pass through and I am afraid the vast amount of reading will get out of hand. I was going to keep a sort of todo list for each of the topics as well as a sort of revision guide
